Community and Heritage Sails

Complimentary sails on Madeline

Maritime Heritage Alliance offers complimentary sails to individuals (Heritage Sails) and non-profit groups (Community Sails) on certain afternoons and evenings when our Tall Ship Madeline is in home port and is available. This is our way of saying "thank you" to the Grand Traverse community for your support.

Heritage Sails

Madeline Heritage Sails are without charge and open to the general public as follows:

  • An individual may sign up to four persons per season.
  • Individuals may only sail once per season, unless they are present to fill no-show spots.
  • Children 10 years of age and under must bring their own Coast Guard approved, child's size PFD to be worn at all times when onboard.
  • Each child under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is not a crew member for that sail.
  • All guests will be required to sign the MHA Release from Liability form at the time of the sail. Release forms for passengers under 18 years old must be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • NO waitlists will be maintained for any sails.

Free parking is available in the MHA lot across from Madeline's harbor on M-22 in Greilickville.

How to schedule your sail

Requests to attend a Heritage Sail will not be accepted until our sail schedule is published. Reservations can be made for a maximum of groups of 4.  Public response is so overwhelming that requests must be submitted via email to ensure reservations are responded to first come- first serve. No reservations are accepted via phone or voicemail. Only reservation requests submitted via email to maritimeheritagealliance@gmail.com once the schedule has been publicized will be honored, dependent on availability.

Email the following to maritimeheritagealliance@gmail.com :

  • your name
  • your phone number and email address
  • name of guest(s)
  • two or three preferred sail dates from those listed on the calendar (**We will not create reservations for individuals who make requests for 'any date available", etc. Demand is always high for sail reservations and we want to be sure registrants will attend their sail)

Please note: Requests for sail reservations can be received in such high volume and we ask for your patience as we respond to each request in the order it is received. As a nonprofit organization with many ongoing programs and projects, we do not have the capacity to process these free sails at the same rate as organizations that focus solely on sail charters. Your patience is appreciated!

CANCELLATIONS: Demand for sails aboard Madeline far exceed our capacity, and it is our goal to ensure that every spot on a sail is filled. If you are unable to attend a sail that you are reserved for, please contact our reservation system (maritimeheritagealliance@gmail.com) as soon as possible so that we may schedule other members of the community.

Community Sails

Nonprofits located within the 5 county Grand Traverse Region are eligible to request a free Community Sail aboard Madeline for their nonprofit.

Before your nonprofit submits a request for a sail, please be aware of the following:

  • Only nonprofits located within the 5 county Grand Traverse Region (Kalkaska, Antrim, Grand Traverse, Leelanau, and Benzie Counties) are eligible for free Community Sails aboard schooner Madeline
  • Madeline's Community and Heritage Sails are intended as a 'Thank You' to our community for their support, thus we prioritize nonprofits that will fill the boat with local community members (staff, volunteers, other community stakeholders)
  • Nonprofits are eligible to sail every three (3) years aboard Madeline. This helps us get more nonprofits out on the water.
  • Sails have a capacity of nineteen (19) guests, regardless of age. Nonprofits are expected to fill the boat to at or near capacity, if they are unable to do so they must let MHA know at least one (1) week prior to their scheduled sail and open spaces will be made available to the public.

Requests for sails are accepted year round and will be offered on a first-come first-served basis. The MHA staff will contact nonprofits in early summer to schedule sails. To be considered for a sail, nonprofits must submit a written request on letterhead to the following address:

Frequently Asked Questions

I submitted my request to sail, when will I hear back?

MHA is a small nonprofit with very limited staff, and oftentimes, sail requests can be received at very high volumes. We respond to all requests first come, first served and try to do so in as timely a manner as possible. Please be patient as we get to your request.

I submitted my request right when the announcement was made, how can the sail I requested already be full?

To announce the sail schedule,  press releases are distributed to all local media. MHA does not have control over which media agencies will share the announcement or when. The announcement you saw, may not be the first shared with the public.

Also, when local media does publish our announcement, it is not uncommon for us to receive hundreds of requests within hours of publishing. While you may have submitted a request immediately, so have many others. MHA always handles all public requests first come, first served to ensure the process is fair.
